This is why we need diversity in romance novels.

"Are you a lesbian?" That is normally the first question I get when I tell someone that I've written a Contemporary Romance about two women falling in love. When I have told people that I wrote about fallen angels, reapers, or reincarnation, they never ask if I am one. Why is that? I don't mind being asked if I'm apart of the LGBT community. It does make me wonder if people really think that we should only write and read about what is close to us personally. Wouldn't that be completely boring?
I like romance of all types and Kennedy and Basil were perfect for one another. I didn't realize how insta their attraction for one another would be. Basil found Kenny intriguing from the moment she laid eyes on her. The scrapped opening from The Art Of Losing Inhibitions, she is scoping Kennedy out and was completely enamored. Then she finds out she is "straight"who wants to experiment. Or so Basil thinks. One can never really know what is in one's heart. Kennedy is going through a rough divorce. Her husband Kevin has left her for another woman. When you change yourself and become someone you don't even recognize anymore for a person and they are no longer interested you begin to question what the point of it all was. You can't build a life on lies you have to be the truest version of who you are.
Stories like these happen in every group and community of people rather they be Black, White, Asian, Latino, gay, straight, or asexual. That is why we need diverse books and they need to be read because once you realize that essentially we are all living breathing people who often experience some of the same issues you can start to accept and love all the ways they we differ as well.

One man's trash is another woman's treasure
Reeling from the loss of her husband to a carefree socialite, uptight Kennedy retreats to Dasia island for a little bit of R and R. Will she learn to let loose in the arms of Basil, the wild-child trust-fund baby with a silver tongue?

Snippet:

Basil

What the hell am I doing? Kennedy was not the kind of girl one had an island fling with. She wore pearls for Christ’s sake. She was a high maintenance, stuffy protestant princess … with the saddest green eyes and a body that begged to be touched, licked, and coveted. My pep talk of the list of Kennedy’s cons wasn’t working.
Fine. How about the fact that she’s straight? She had the indention of a wedding ring. You know what you are supposed to do with the married, straight ones. You catch, bed, and release.
Kennedy wasn’t the catch and release type.
“Okay, I’m changed. You can look.” Kennedy stepped out of the door, and my eyes widened at Kennedy’s curves in the emerald swimsuit. I forced my tongue back into my mouth.
“Wow, you look amazing.” Understatement of the year, Bas. “I … we better head out to meet Fokai.”
“Do I have to walk around like this? Can’t I put clothes over it?” Wrapping her arms around herself, Kennedy covered her stomach.
I reached over and gently took her hand into mine, effectively removing her cover. “You look great. The world should totally see.”

Guest Post by Michelle Moran (author of Rebel Queen)

JANAM KUNDLIS
Michelle Moran

With every book I write, I discover something about the culture I’m researching which completely blows me away, often because it’s so unusual and something I’ve never encountered before. In the case of my book, REBEL QUEEN, set in India during the British invasion, the concept of Janam Kundlis struck a chord with me, particularly since Janam Kundlis very nearly played a role in my own life and my marriage to my husband, who is Indian.

Also known as an astrological chart, a Janam Kundli is made by a priest for each child in India. No one is sure when the concept of a Janam Kundli came to be, but as Vedic astrology is several thousand years old, it’s not surprising that my protagonist’s Janam Kundli would have looked similar to my husband’s,¬ even though they were born more than a hundred years apart. A person’s Janam Kundli includes the details of their birth–time, date, planetary alignments. It also includes other things which aren’t so common in the West, such as that person’s probable future career and who they were in their most recent past life (in my husband’s case, a yogi!).

Reading a person’s natal chart is serious business. Once a person’s Janam Kundli is created, they will keep that document with them for life, producing it when it’s time for marriage. Even today, Janam Kundlis are used to make prospective matches between brides and grooms throughout India, where the majority of marriages are arranged. And woe betide anyone whose Janam Kundli declares them to be a manglik, or a bad-luck person. If that’s the case, as it was for the famous Bollywood actress and former Miss World Aishwarya Rai, one of two options are available. You can either marry another manglik, thus canceling out your bad-luck status, or you can hire a priest to conduct a variety of ceremonies that will make it possible to marry someone who isn’t a manglik like yourself. This last option, however, is only available if the non-manglik person’s family finds the risk acceptable. In Aishwarya Rai’s case, her in-laws obviously felt the “risk” was worth it, and in 2007 she married a tree before she married her husband, thereby canceling out her bad-luck in this way.

Why a tree? Well, this was something I very nearly discovered myself when my own Janam Kundli was made. Apparently, like Aishwarya Rai, I too am probably a manglik, meaning marriage for me would most likely end in the divorce or death of my spouse. I say probably because my Janam Kundli was done online. The effect, however, was very nearly the same. Major discussions took place as to whether I would need to marry a tree before the wedding could proceed, or whether my Janam Kundli should be discounted since I am not, after all, Indian, and my Janam Kundli hadn’t “officially” been made by a priest.

In the end, it was decided that my husband should take the risk and go for it. I never had to marry a tree or even choose among a variety of clay urns for my groom. Either option, apparently, is acceptable, as it’s believed that a person’s manglik dosh can be canceled out if the manglik person’s bad luck is spent on the first marriage. Thus, the bride first marries a clay urn or a tree, then either breaks the clay urn or chops down her tree-husband in order to become a “widow” (in some places, the tree is allowed to survive). After this, the second marriage is ready to proceed without a hitch.

There are varying interpretations of this ceremony, and even though it didn’t end up affecting me, a person’s Janam Kundli can alter their destiny, just as I describe in the beginning of REBEL QUEEN. It’s cultural gems like these which make researching historical fiction such a pleasure, and it’s these type of details which I try to include in each of my books. As a writer, my hope is that they pique the reader’s interest along the way, and as a reader, they are the sort of facts which help ground me in another place and time.

Rebel Queen

From the internationally bestselling author of Nefertiti and Cleopatra’s Daughter comes the breathtaking story of Queen Lakshmi—India’s Joan of Arc—who against all odds defied the mighty British invasion to defend her beloved kingdom.

When the British Empire sets its sights on India in the mid-nineteenth century, it expects a quick and easy conquest. India is fractured and divided into kingdoms, each independent and wary of one another, seemingly no match for the might of the English. But when they arrive in the Kingdom of Jhansi, the British army is met with a surprising challenge.

Instead of surrendering, Queen Lakshmi raises two armies—one male and one female—and rides into battle, determined to protect her country and her people. Although her soldiers may not appear at first to be formidable against superior British weaponry and training, Lakshmi refuses to back down from the empire determined to take away the land she loves.

Told from the unexpected perspective of Sita—Queen Lakshmi’s most favored companion and most trusted soldier in the all-female army—Rebel Queen shines a light on a time and place rarely explored in historical fiction. In the tradition of her bestselling novel, Nefertiti, and through her strong, independent heroines fighting to make their way in a male dominated world, Michelle Moran brings nineteenth-century India to rich, vibrant life.

Who's ready for Thanksgiving?

Hello happy readers!

I love this time of year. From October all the way through February 14th it is fun holiday season. I love it. It also brings a lot of distractions for my writing and I know yall have been waiting over a year for the next book in the Reborn series. I'm sorry. I am really working on it but there is also so much going on with that series publisher. The owner passed away this summer and we are trying to reorganize things but I swear early next year The Reborn series fans will finally get the next book. Depending on how Bayou Brew Publishing is restructured there maybe more than one book left in the series.

I also have two short stories coming up. The first is part of an Anthology and it is New Year's Eve themed releasing on December 26th. The second will be released as a Valentine's day short story releasing February 1st. They will both be non paranormal. It is so new for me not to write Paranormal Romance it is so out my box I get so nervous and get tempted to toss in an angel or reaper. So tempted. I will tell you more on the story a little later this week.

Part Time Reaper II will be released in April. I decided not to rush that series as I had originally planned to do. I planned to release PTR series every four months keeping them short. Instead I'm going to go with how mainstream does their books and every year do that series. That means I will make it a longer story and try...TRY not to have such killer cliffhangers. ;-)

Memory Keepers #2 will also be in the works but it is with a publisher so fingers crossed it comes out in 2015. I keep trying to push book #1 so they see the demand by readers. lol

I will post before Thanksgiving but I hope you enjoy this time and not get too stressed out. Enjoy your family, friends and a good book!

Oh the things I have done...

Wow, last year I was sitting down probably bitching and moaning on how badly I wanted my stories to be published because more than anything, I wanted to share my stories.
Now here I am, sitting here still bitching and moaning over how happy I am that I am published because more than anything, I want to share my stories.
So I promote myself and I market myself. I do everything sans stand on that corner slinging my books at people.

Samuel
So what do I have coming up next for you guys? Well, a lot! Book two in The Reborn series should be out before the end of the year. I am also working on a new series about Reapers, also Angels because well I love angels. (I was trying to post a picture of one of the angels but things are going wonky.) The reaper series is New Adult. So smexiness will be done. A new werewolf or shifter is in the works. That is totally new to me. Last but not least Book 2 in when Lily's Fall!
For now I must go write.

These aren't any of my characters but it's just smexiness examples that might be had.

ECTAIN “ERIC” EDECK knows the pain he has caused Mayne but the connection is undeniable. Can Mayne get past the hurt and fall in love or has her heart been broken too many times?

What nobody tells you

I haven't written a word since the release of my first novel. The Reborn is my debut novel but it isn't my first contracted novel so I am lucky enough to have TWO first time babies. My first book to get a contract (Death Knows My Name out in July) and the first to be out for the world to ravage (The Reborn out NOW.) But what nobody tells you is writing is different after your first release.

How you ask? Allow me to tell you. I have lost my mojo. Okay it is temporary but nonetheless, I haven't or I can't write since the first review came in begging for book two in the trilogy. Yay and Ahhh! Okay, yay because someone liked my book to want to read more. Yippee. Ahhh because now there is expectations. What if they don't think it is as good? The expectation, fear of disappointing and just the omg I have readers factor paralyzes me whenever I look at my plot board so I can start writing.

I have been assured that I will get it back. I don't want to write a story just with the hope that yall like it. I mean I do hope yall love it but I wrote The Reborn because it was Dain's story. I enjoyed it and I think that translated onto the pages. I just want that magic to repeat on Akila's tale.

SO that is what nobody tells you, writing after your first release is hard. :)

The Thing About Books

When I met Brandon I knew he was different. He was sheltered naive and I could see he was special. I devoured his book and became a huge fan of the Brethren series. I was all the way in Team Brandon. I mean twi-hard level. Much like Bella toward Edward, I was irrevocable in love with him. Okay, I promise that was my last Twilight reference. Sorry.

As the series went on I hated people for him. Like deep seeded hate. If they wronged him they felt my wrath or at least Sara Reinke did.

Then one day it happened. Brandon, he broke my heart. No more than that. He shattered it and stomped on my heart with his betrayal. I literally laid in bed all day asking myself why? Why! Why can't even fictional guys do the right thing? He was supposed to be epic. I was going through a break up. Not my first but certainly it felt like the worst. I still think about Brandon and get butterflies then cringe at the memory of how he failed me. I haven't loved like that since.

With Brandon it was the perfect storm. The timing, how he was, and who I thought he would become...meshed together into magic literary love.

THIS. THIS is why I read. It is why you should read as well. You never know what book will make you fall in love and feel. It is a special kind of magic. Only books can give it to you. When you crack open a book for the very first time, that excitement you feel. The nervousness of not knowing...yes, that is why I read.

If you would like to join the Brandon roller coaster...Dark Thirst is currently being offered for free by the author Sara Reinke for a limited time. Get it Free HERE!

Check out the rest of the series as well.

The Dreaded Triangle- Introducing Samuel.

Say Hi to Samuel

I make no secret that I hate love triangles. I have even gone so far as to not buy books or lem a book because it involved a triangle. So how did I find myself writing one? It is simple. It was meant to be a plot device. I didn't mean for Shayna or in fact myself to fall for Samuel. I went into this knowing that Shayna was always meant to work things out with Yeshua. I didn't know how but they really would. I just needed a small obsticle. "Hey! How about an older guy." My brain said excitedly. "Oh he could be an important male figure in Yesh's life." My brain piled on. I should have told my brain to shut up. But I thought it was a great idea. I knew I was in trouble when Shayna laid eyes on Samuel and he locked eyes with her then smiled. I gulped. Oh boy. We are in huge trouble. Huge, huge, huge trouble. Yeshua sort of faded in our minds and Samuel was so shiney and bright and perfectly damaged. Just what a girl like Shayna needed after all that she has been through. I even noticed Yeshua, graciously taking a step back. Bowing out except, I know Yesh. I wouldn't count him out just yet. Neither should Samuel.

Hijacked!

Hey all, I’m Shayna and I have been hijacking Casse’s thoughts so I decided to take over her blog as well. *waves* I am her new TextNovel project. She insist on calling it Tag em n Bag em. Yuck. I will see if I can change that.

So why am I here anyway? Just to share a little background story to make you anxious to read MY full story.

HERE IS ME. A regular girl
I had a regular guy...hot guy at that.

This happened...I know don't judge!

Then he disappeared. Gone. I was all:

Then I was like,

Turns out he had a great reason for disappearing. A year and a half later her came back with an excuse and a cat as his peace offering. Keep the excuses gimme the cat!

I also had a crazy lot happen while Yesh was gone, I found out I am a reaper! So you are thinking:

WRONG! I'm more like:

Now I know why Yesh gave me a cat named Scythe while smirking. So though I am a reaper, well part time reaper I still have High School to finish and an ex boyfriend who ditched me after sex to deal with. I'm pretty much the same girl...HER.
But if you see a hot jerky guy followed by Me and of course Scythe (because every Reaper HAS to have one mine just has to be cuter than the rest) I am sorry.

After Dain was Reborn and Akila Remade...Reawaken with Darkhan.

Darkhan

Reawaken will have three different POV’s. I decided this very early on because The Reborn and The Remade doesn’t really give the HEA or even the HFN ending of the main couples in the story. Bonnie and Dain in The Reborn, Akila and Marco in The Remade. I just felt that they deserve to get their ending in their words and in their heads. The POV’s will be Dain, Akila and…Darkhan. You have no idea who he is yet. I barely have an idea but he has been beckoning to me very stoically since a third through The Reborn. He is very mysterious but he seems willing enough to tell his story and I am a bit afraid to let him into my head and heart. His pain is crippling and very tangible. I can feel it just by thinking about him.

I think you will like him, I know Akila sure does ;-) *spoiler alert* lol I can’t wait to get to his story The Reawaken (It’s mainly Darkhan’s tell so The Ruined and The Shattered still fits but…I wanted a positive just like the rest. I cross my fingers I can SPIN his tragic tell into a positive.) We still have a long way until Darkhan can win your hearts so enjoy the end of The Reborn and The Remade will be ready soon. I hope!

No rest for the slacker

Hey all, I know it looks as if I am slacking since I have not updated my blog in awhile but actually a lot of work is being done.

1. After a shit load of form rejections I decided to redo my query letter and it seemed to have worked, it's still too soon to tell but I have received  request for a partial and a request for a full. I also received a rejection with and invitation to revise and resubmit. See no form rejection. I would consider the new query letter a success...kinda.
2. I am in the 2nd week of a Fast Draft. Fast Draft: 5k words a day for 14 days. So Remade is about half done. yay.
3. The Reborn is being edited and fleshed out and can be found on both Textnovel.com and WattPad.com
4.I decided on the name of the 3rd book in the Reborn series...I think. I will know for sure when I plot it out and write the first chapter. But all this will wait until after Remade is finished and after When Lily's Fall is re-plotted. When Lily's Fall is book two in the DKMN world and has been rewritten and deleted at least 3 times as DKMN is revised. lol

See no slacking here.

What inspired The Reborn Series *deleted scene*

A lot of people ask me how do I come up with the stories I write. I get my ideas from so many places. I already shared with you how Death Knows My Name was inspired by the movie Prophecy II. I guess it is time to share what inspired The Reborn series.

About a year and a half ago [edit: Wow more like closer to 2 years ago!] I use to be a huge blog surfer. My book blog roll was massive. Reviewers, writers, anything book related I was there. One day while I was surfing the Deadline Dames and they do this meme type thing called ROD ( Readers on Deadline) where they post a picture and us readers get inspired and write a little flash fiction. Well, I did get inspired and my flash fiction (which I did not even enter to the contest) turned into an entirely new animal.

I posted the fiction chapter by chapter on Textnovel.com (was huge into textnovel back then and the story even got editor's choice.) When I came to the end of my flash fiction one devoted reader demanded that it not stopped there. I also did not want to say goodbye to Tara and Dain, so I obliged.

That one ROD picture inspired a whole new world that includes two prequel short stories (both available now on Smashwords.com for free) and 3 novels (coming soon...I hope!)

The opening scene I wrote for the picture that was the initial first thing I wrote for the world, didn't even end up in the final version of Reborn which I am currently editing one last time (I hope. But 1 turns to 3 so quickly.) and then querying. *fingers crossed*

But I am deciding to post the cut prologue below and the picture. Also don't forget to download your copies of Lord of Requited Love and The Life That Ends here for free!

Forever- By Michelle Monique (click pic for her page)
Deleted Scene
I shouldn't be here. I know I shouldn't, yet, here I am. Sighing heavily I ran my hand through my hair which was a little damp from the sweat on my brow.

“Why are you here Dain?” I murmured to myself. That's right, I am a glutton for punishment. I can't have her. I shouldn't even want her since I had been purged not even a century ago, but I do.

Tara sat under the knotty oak tree, her dress flowering around her like the petals of the prettiest flower on earth. By God she was breathtaking in this light. The moon shined down it’s silver light over her skin and shone off her nutmeg colored hair. The wind blew slightly and tangled in the strands as it tugged at them softly. The stirring of the breezed brought her soft scent to me and I shivered remembering the taste of her mouth and the feel of her skin on my lips and tongue.

I sighed. No, that was another lifetime. Centuries ago. I couldn’t remember that now. Not with the danger it would now bring. We were the reborn they wouldn’t allow us to be together again. Only once and we had already lived that chance.

They had purged us both. Me more than once but unless they purged my soul and replaced my heart it would never last. My love for Tara was branded on my soul and my skin would never forget her touch. Not in this lifetime or my next. Damn-it we had a family together, though I shouldn’t remember them either.

Tara lay back on the grass eyes focused on the stars, mouth set in a soft pillowy pout. Oh to touch those lips once more with mine, to take them gently between my teeth teasingly and sooth away the sting with the tip of my tongue.

But this time they had screwed us. I turned away. Tara was a Fifty-six years old women and I was but a boy at Sixteen years old. Maybe in the next lifetime. I walked away with a longing heart.

I feel guilty about how mean I am...to fake people.

I just finished The Reborn 1st draft and though I did follow mostly the direction I wanted to go in I did one major change that is making me have to go back and rewrite book 2's opening. I mean that is no big deal, it sucked anyway. The main issue is I totally just screwed 2 characters over. On the upside the couple of characters I was supposed to screw over lucked out...for now at least.

One character, damn I feel like a bitch for what I'm doing with him. He is going a place that is going to take a miracle to dig him out from. Not sure if I can save him!

His poor heroine, he is going to put her in purgatory then drag her through hell because of one tragic mistake.

In the next book (the one I have to re-write the opening to) one guy's jealousy can cost him everything while another girl's past is haunting her and the one person she loves more than life just won't let her shake it. Can't he see that she has changed? He can't and makes her question if he even knows who she is anymore...the girl she was then has nothing to do with the woman she is now! If he can't see that...is he the man for her?

Oh and book 3...talk about dark places.

Oh the angst I putting these teens through. Sorry characters!

Cut or uncut?

I am okay with rejection. Or at least that is what I told myself. I would say, “oh they aren’t rejecting my work they just don’t like the query.” Until, I got my first full MS rejection…in form letter. Ouch. I know, acquisition is purely subjective, right? One person didn’t like it doesn’t mean that nobody will like it. Still it is hard to hear without a bottle—I mean glass of wine. Dratz, why did I give up drinking this week again?

Dejectedly, I even thought of giving up writing. “I suck.” I told myself…“I suck I suck I suck.” It was like a sulking pout as I wallowed in my bed. I was ready to throw in the towel, at least on adult paranormal. Maybe I could work on my YA novel?…

Then, I decided maybe I could look into fixing the pacing of chapter one like EVERYONE has been saying could use help. I think it’s effin perfect but if everyone is saying it…

But guess why I was so reluctant to cut scenes from chapter one, besides it being effin perfect? Because you pull one string and then you have to go chapter by chapter and rework it. The more you cut the more you have to rework and the more you rework…Yes! The more you have to cut!

I just cut one of my favorite scenes that shows Devon and Mayne’s friendship…but it’s about ERIC and Mayne so…it is gone. Maybe I will stick it in Devon’s short story? No… *wipes tear*

The sea of No

Well, the beginning of the year I decided it was time to take a dive and go swimming.  For a writer that means start querying. Yes, if you are also a writer your heart probably started racing at the thought.  The dread, the excitement, the vigilant email watching, and the pending heartbreak.

Querying is like dating.  All those rejections in search of someone who will: see you, ‘get’ you, then love you enough to marry you and say “Yes, I want to share this journey with you. Yes, I believe in you.”

It's almost that time.

Hey folk,
I have been hard at work lately and with Death Knows My Name off being edited, I am do for some major editing sometime next week when I get it back with what I am sure will look like the pages are bleeding.  I have found the perfect editor for me who is as passionate as the story I am telling as I am.  Which is awesome!
So, any day now I will be ready to start the agent search.  *pulls hair out and screams*  It is so scary.  You hear so many whispered horror stories.  It is very intimidating, but I think I am ready.  I have been extremely bless thus far with surrounding myself with amazing people.  I found awesome critique partners, and now with my proof reader/personal editor...I am confident that I will find an agent who will do a spectacular job.
I am not delusional, I know, it won't be abracadabra, I get the call.  But eventually I am sure I will find the perfect one.
But the hard part will be NOT to sit back on my haunches and wait.  I have to keep writing.  I have a lot planned for my career.  I have the rest of the books in the DKMN world and I also have my YA story that was picked amongst the Editor's Choice last year.  In order to get all these first drafts done I am going to be doing a lot of Fast Drafts.  A lot.  December 1st I have one scheduled for the Remade.  Then I have to wait because I am planning a big move.  I know, I JUST moved to Missouri now I am going to Oklahoma?  Yes.  But I can probably squeeze in Devon's short story The Sun Catcher.  (I LOVE the title and once you read DKMN you will see why.) So I won't do another fast draft until most likely write after Christmas for When Lily's Fall re-do.  Immediately after (maybe 2 days break) I will Fast Draft working title: The Shattered (this title fits from my rough mind plot of hero but too many books have this title lately. Guess we like our men damaged aye ladies?)  It's the final book in the Reborn world.  Then I will go back and do some editing on all those fast drafts before I start picking through The Desecration Chronicles and making in one book with 3 parts (Born Through Desecration, Daughter of Desecration and Desecration's Queen).

Looks as if I am going to be one busy chick.
